Prologue:
“Is the Clan ready for battle?” the dark she-cat asked.
“As ready as they’ll ever be Scrape,” her deputy replied.
“Good,” Scrape purred. “Now, Fang, I want you to send a patrol of warriors to the Twoleg farm. I want them to bring me the traitor Barley and his friend, alive.”
“Very well,” Fang replied. With a flick of his tail, he summoned one of his warriors to him and gave him Scrapes instructions. The cat nodded and disappeared down an alley way.
“Our plan is in motion,” Scrape murmured, half to herself. “Soon we will see the end of the forest Clan cats, and their territory will be ours. Scourge was weak. But with a stronger Clan and better strategy. We will win. StarClan or no StarClan, the forest Clans will be gone forever by leaf fall.”
Chapter One
Ravenpaw pinpointed a mouse, pounced, and killed it with a swift bite. Carrying it over to some hay, he sat down and ate it in a few quick bites. He lay there for a few minutes, dozing off. He was jolted awake by Barley’s terrified cry.
“Ravenpaw! Help! BloodClan is attacking us!” Ravenpaw sprang up and dashed out of the barn. He saw his friend hopelessly outnumbered by several BloodClan warriors. Not thinking about his own life, he plunged into the battle to help his friend.
Ravenpaw knew it was a useless effort. But the enemy cats wouldn’t leave them alone. Slowly, the cats drove the two loners away from the safety of their barn. Finally, one cat slashed at Barley’s throat. As blood spattered every where, he cried out with pain, collapsed, and lay motionless.
Ravenpaw let out a cry of grief. His friend was dead. He turned tail and ran. He ran along the Thunderpath, as the BloodClan warriors chased him. He hoped to run into a border patrol, but no cats came.
Eventually, he came to the edge of ThunderClan territory. Ravenpaw glanced behind him. The cats were nowhere in sight. He sniffed the air. There was no sign of the enemy cats. ‘I must have lost them’ he thought.
Ravenpaw wondered what he should do next. He was badly injured, but he didn’t now how to treat wounds. ‘Perhaps ThunderClan will help me’ he decided. ‘Firestar did say I was welcome there.’ Making up his mind, the loner trotted in to the forest.
Unknown the sleek black tom, the BloodClan warriors followed him.
